3.3 - Glossary of marketing terms to know

Here's a list of useful marketing techniques and concepts for entrepreneurs.

Branding

This is your "Brand Image". This term covers all the marketing actions taken by a brand to build its own identity: visual codes, tone of voice, etc. The aim is to stand out from the competition and leave a lasting impression on the consumer's mind.

For example, Apple's (very distinctive) branding, with its minimalist yet luxurious aesthetic, or its lexicon of innovation.

Bundling

A marketing strategy in the form of a promotional offer, combining several products in a single package to entice customers to buy.

Call-To-Action Means "Call to action".

These are short sentences urging the reader to perform a specific action.

For example, "Discover this article" is a CTA encouraging people to visit your blog.

Cross-sell

This is the marketing practice of promoting an additional or related product to another item, which has already generated interest or been purchased by the consumer.

M-Commerce (or, in its extended version, Mobile Commerce)

Means of making purchases from a mobile or tablet.

Niche

A specialized market in which a business chooses to make a name for itself in order to attract the attention of a specific audience.

Social proof

Evidence of consumer approval (or otherwise) of a service or product: for example, reviews on Google or Trustpilot are good social proof.

Social-to-store

The process of sharing store links on social networking profiles.

Upsell

In the same vein as cross-sell, this time the aim is to encourage the purchase of a more expensive, more sophisticated product than the one that is attracting the consumer's interest.
